Why do we need to consult?

Local Government is increasingly required to engage with local communities in council policy and decision making.

Effective consultation can support:

  • More efficient planning and commissioning.
  • Better use of resources
  • Problems being highlighted and resolved more quickly
  • The demonstration that local views and opinions have been taken into account

Good engagement strategies and consultation processes enables local government to:

  • Pass on information
  • Listen to ideas and opinions before reaching a final decision
  • Learn from local communities and local people about what their priorities are.

By consulting with people local government are able to ensure that decisions made are the right ones. Consultation puts local people at the heart of the decision making process.

However finding new and innovative ways to engage and consult with people can be challenging. Often people who have engaged in a consultation exercise can become even more frustrated when they do not receive any feedback in terms of how their contributions have affected the final decision making process.
